Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with Nicolas Frotiee, the Co-Founder of Footbar Middle East. Footbar has been making waves in the world of youth football, leveraging cutting-edge technology to revolutionize player performance analysis. At the heart of its innovation is a smart, wearable tracker that attaches to a player’s calf, using artificial intelligence to measure key football metrics like shot power, sprint speed, and passes. With a vision to nurture and develop young football talent in the Middle East, Footbar stands as a testament to innovation and passion for the sport. Let’s dive in to understand more about this exciting venture, its objectives, and the future it envisions for football in the region.
Can you tell us about the inspiration behind creating Footbar and how it came to be?
With the increasing role of technology and data in sports, and as passionate football enthusiasts, the founders of Footbar identified a gap in the market—there was no tracker specifically designed for amateur football players. The vision was to create the “Strava of football.” They set out to develop an affordable, user-friendly, and gamified football tracker using generative AI, not only for the top 1% of elite players but for the broader market—covering over 300 million football players worldwide.

What are the primary objectives of Footbar Middle East, and how do they align with the broader goals of youth football development in the region?
I co-founded Footbar Middle East in 2022, just before the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, which significantly accelerated the development of football in the region. This momentum continues to grow with the upcoming 2027 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia and will further intensify leading up to the 2034 FIFA World Cup. With 37 million football-obsessed inhabitants in Saudi Arabia, the impact will be felt across the entire GCC.
GCC countries are striving to establish themselves among the world’s top footballing nations while also increasing grassroots football participation. This is where Footbar plays a crucial role—it supports both objectives simultaneously. A wider and more engaged player pool increases the chances of discovering and developing top-tier talent.

How does the Footbar tracker work, and what makes it unique compared to other football tracking devices?
Footbar stands out for two key reasons. First, it is incredibly easy to use—players simply attach it around their calf. Second, its gamified app enables users to share their stats on social media, bridging the gap between sports and digital engagement.
As a parent of teenagers myself, I’ve seen firsthand how Footbar has transformed my son’s motivation—he now trains extra to improve his stats and compete with his friends! This concept also convinced 2018 World Cup champion Raphaël Varane to become our ambassador. He is passionate about promoting football among young players, instilling values such as discipline, hard work, and respect for opponents.

What impact has Footbar had on youth football in the Middle East since its introduction?
Unlike in Europe, where football players in clubs and academies are officially registered with federations, players in the Middle East often lack formal licensing. This means federations don’t have a comprehensive database of active players competing in official competitions.
We believe Footbar could become the de facto “license to play” football in the Middle East. This would provide federations and Ministries of Sport with critical insights into player activity and performance across the region.
Additionally, the gamification aspect fosters healthy competition among recreational players, increasing the overall talent pool. Footbar has the potential to shape Gen Z into a generation that is both active and well-educated in football. Let’s not forget—this generation will be the core fanbase for their national teams in 2034, serving as the “12th man” that often makes the difference on the pitch!
Can you share some success stories or testimonials from players or coaches who have used Footbar?
We collaborate with ambitious clubs and academies across the UAE, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, helping them integrate data into their coaching methods. After each training session or match, coaches receive player data, allowing them to track progress, provide feedback, and engage with both players and parents using objective statistics.
Some clubs even use Footbar data for internal competitions—such as “best runner of the month” or “fastest shot” challenges. If a player completes an extra individual session to improve their stats, the coach is notified. When this happens, everyone benefits—the player, the coach, and the parents! This is where Footbar becomes truly transformative.
In France and the Netherlands, we already partner with national football federations. They have widely implemented Footbar to scout talent, expand participation, and track real-time performance during matches and training. Federations are also integrating Footbar data into their official apps, further engaging young players within their communities.
How does Footbar integrate with modern technology and artificial intelligence to enhance player performance analysis?
The Footbar tracker is equipped with an accelerometer that records leg movements. Our generative AI then translates these movements into key football actions, measuring 15 performance metrics, including shot power, number of passes, sprint speed, and more.
We offer versions tailored for individual players as well as clubs and academies, covering all formats of the game—including 5-a-side, 11-a-side, futsal, and beyond.
We are particularly excited to see the massive investments governments in the region are making in artificial intelligence. AI is driving an economic revolution that is also transforming the sports industry.

What advice would you give to young footballers looking to improve their game using Footbar?
As I mentioned earlier, Footbar should be an essential part of every serious footballer’s kit for two reasons. First, it provides players with crucial physical and technical data through a gamified app, allowing them to track their progress just like professional athletes. Second, it helps players build a digital football résumé—something incredibly valuable when transferring between clubs or academies.
More importantly, Footbar can be a game-changer for those looking to secure scholarships at U.S. universities, as performance data can strengthen their applications.
Where can people buy Footbar?
We have a strong partnership with Decathlon in the UAE and Qatar, so you can find Footbar in their stores. It is also available online on Amazon.ae and on our official website, www.footbar.me.
