Abu Dhabi Set to Host Fifth Spartan World Championship in the Al Wathba Desert
The Abu Dhabi Sports Council and Spartan, the world’s leading endurance and obstacle sports brand, have confirmed that the fifth edition of the Spartan World Championship will take place in the heart of the Al Wathba Desert in Abu Dhabi from 20th to 23rd November.
Bringing together thousands of elite athletes and community participants from around the globe, the four-day championship will test competitors’ strength, endurance, and speed across a variety of challenging races.
The event kicks off on Thursday, 20th November, with an evening race open exclusively to women, featuring a 5 km course and 20 obstacles. On the same day, a closed evening race for women ensures participants can compete in complete privacy, supported by a fully female crew and without media coverage.
On Friday, 21st November, a mixed evening Sprint 5K will take place, inviting men and women to tackle a 5 km route with 20 obstacles – a real test in one of the most challenging Spartan World Races.
Saturday, 22nd November, features the flagship Beast 21K World Championships for Elite, Age Groups, and Open categories, spanning 21 km with 30 obstacles. That day will also see competitive Kids Races over distances from 1 to 3 km, engaging the younger generation in the spirit of endurance.
The championship concludes on Sunday, 23rd November, with the Elite Teams World Championship (teams of three athletes, including two males and one female), the Super 10K Open, and the Sprint 5K Open.
Aref Hamad Al Awani, General Secretary of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, stated that the upcoming edition would be exciting and challenging, building on previous successes. He explained that the championship “will enhance community engagement by providing opportunities for people of all fitness levels to participate in a variety of races that meet the aspirations of all groups, in line with the objectives of the Year of the Community initiative, which seeks to engage everyone in inspiring and effective sporting activities.”
Al Awani added, “Abu Dhabi’s hosting of the championship for the fifth consecutive year embodies our ongoing commitment to spreading the culture of sports and a healthy lifestyle, and consolidating the capital’s position as a global sports destination.”
On the significance of hosting the event in Abu Dhabi, Joe De Sena, founder of Spartan, remarked that Abu Dhabi provides an ideal environment for challenge and endurance championships, pointing to the region’s unique natural desert terrain, which presents a significant challenge to all participants. This, he notes, makes it the perfect location for one of the world’s most exciting and demanding Spartan Championships.
