In a landmark move that has sent ripples through the football world, Italian international Mateo Retegui has officially joined Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiyah from Atalanta for a record-breaking fee of €65 million plus add-ons. This transfer not only marks the most expensive signing in Al Qadsiyah’s history but also makes Retegui the most expensive Italian player ever, surpassing Sandro Tonali’s €59 million move to Newcastle United.
A Meteoric Rise
Retegui, 26, was born in Argentina but chose to represent Italy through his grandparents. After making his international debut in 2023 under Roberto Mancini, he quickly became a key figure for the Azzurri, scoring six goals in 20 appearances.
His club career took off after a move to Genoa, but it was his single season at Atalanta that truly showcased his talent. Signed as a late replacement for the injured Gianluca Scamacca, Retegui scored 25 goals in 36 Serie A matches, earning the Capocannoniere title as the league’s top scorer. He also contributed nine assists across all competitions, helping Atalanta secure a third-place finish.
The Al Qadsiyah Project
Al Qadsiyah, newly promoted to the Saudi Pro League, has been making bold moves in the transfer market. Retegui’s arrival signals their ambition to compete at the highest level. The striker has signed a three-year contract reportedly worth €20 million per season in wages.
This move follows the departure of Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who scored 21 goals in 36 matches for the club last season. Retegui is expected to fill that void and become the focal point of Al Qadsiyah’s attack.
Risky Move?
While the move is financially lucrative, it raises questions about Retegui’s future with the Italian national team. With Gennaro Gattuso now at the helm, it remains to be seen how playing outside Europe will affect Retegui’s international prospects
