Isaac del Toro Powers to Eighth Victory at Circuito de Getxo, Leading UAE Team Emirates-XRG 1-2 Finish
Isaac del Toro delivered a masterful performance at the 2025 Circuito de Getxo, claiming his eighth win of the season after a blistering 16.5km solo attack. The UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider launched his decisive move on the punishing ascent of the Alto de Pike, maintaining his advantage to the finish in Getxo and contributing to the Emirati squad’s impressive 69th victory of the campaign.
Behind the Mexican champion, teammate Juan Ayuso played a critical tactical role by monitoring and responding to the chasing group. Ayuso’s savvy riding and powerful sprint enabled him to secure second place, cementing a dominant 1-2 finish for UAE Team Emirates-XRG.
The achievement capped off a successful Basque racing weekend for the team. On Saturday, Jan Christen had clinched second place at the Clásica San Sebastián, with Del Toro placing fifth after a hard-fought contest. However, on Sunday, the young 21-year-old Mexican made his mark with an unmistakable attack.
Throughout the race, UAE Team Emirates-XRG worked to exert control over the peloton. Riders such as Marcos Freire, Domen Novak, and Jay Vine were instrumental in keeping a 10-man breakaway within reach, ensuring the peloton arrived together at the foot of the final climbs.
From the base of the Alto de Pike (2km at 9.6% gradient), Ayuso upped the tempo, thinning out the field and setting the perfect launchpad for Del Toro. With 16.5km remaining, Del Toro surged clear, quickly establishing a 10-second advantage by the summit.
On the descent, Ayuso carefully monitored Alex Aranburu (Cofidis), while Héctor Álvarez (Lidl-Trek) and Toms Skujiņš joined the pursuit. Despite their efforts, Del Toro’s gap hovered at 20 seconds as the roads leveled out, and he held firm during the last uphill drag to the finish.
