Isaac del Toro Claims Overall Victory at Vuelta a Burgos
ROME, 10th August, 2025 – With an impressive second place on the fifth and final stage, Isaac del Toro clinched the overall victory at the 2025 Vuelta a Burgos, marking his second stage race win of the season. The Mexican rider’s success is a testament to a week of consistent racing, overcoming a dramatic setback on stage five when he suffered a flat tyre, yet still mounted a valiant effort to secure second at Lagunas de Neila.
This win pushes UAE Team Emirates-XRG to an incredible 70 victories for the 2025 season, and elevates del Toro’s personal tally to nine wins in the current year.
After crossing the line on the summit finish, the 21-year-old watched anxiously as the gaps were confirmed, securing his overall triumph. Along with the general classification, del Toro dominated the young rider classification, leading after five challenging days in the Burgos region. However, his ascent to victory was anything but straightforward.
Near the top of the penultimate key climb, the Alto de Rozavientos, del Toro faced significant adversity as a puncture forced him off the back. Quick support from the team car allowed him to rejoin, but only after a daring descent to re-enter the peloton. Demonstrating his fight and skill, del Toro surged back as the final climb — the decisive Lagunas de Neila (9.1% for 6.4km) — loomed.
Going into the final stage, Léo Bisiaux of Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale held the race lead. Yet, attacks from Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) and del Toro with just 3km to go changed the narrative. The pair broke clear on the steepest gradients, dancing away from the rest and ensuring that only they would contest the stage win.
In a repeat of their duel from the Clásica San Sebastián, it looked to be a two-up sprint. Del Toro, having spent vital energy chasing after his mechanical issue, was ultimately distanced inside the last kilometre, allowing Ciccone to secure the stage. For del Toro, the main battle was with the clock, needing enough time to overturn the deficit to Bisiaux.
As the seconds fell away, so too did Bisiaux’s hopes. Slipping to third overall, the Frenchman saw del Toro surge ahead in the general classification, claiming the Emirati squad’s 70th victory this season.
After the finish, del Toro commented:
“The last stage was tricky, I punctured on the last descent and had a hard chase back on and thought the race might have been getting away from me, but we maintained the calm and managed to get back in the race.
