Julian Weigl Set to Leave Borussia Mönchengladbach for Saudi Club
Julian Weigl is on the verge of completing a move away from Borussia Mönchengladbach, as confirmed by the club’s sporting director Roland Virkus. In an interview with Sky Germany, Virkus stated: “Julian Weigl is a deserving player. I can confirm that he is in Saudi Arabia. We’re on the right track. It’s about a sale, not a loan. The window over there is open longer.”
The 29-year-old defensive midfielder has not featured for Gladbach in the current Bundesliga season, and his future with the club has been in doubt. Although he has been training, reports from earlier this week suggested that Weigl would not play under head coach Gerardo Seoane unless he committed his future to the club. With Saudi Arabia’s transfer window open until September 10, there is ample time for a deal to be finalized.
Two Saudi Pro League clubs, Al-Shabab and Al-Qadisiyah, have shown strong interest in acquiring Weigl, though it remains unconfirmed which club he is currently negotiating with in the kingdom. Sources within the club suggest a permanent transfer is being negotiated, with Gladbach hoping to secure a fee between €10 million and €15 million.
One potential obstacle to the transfer is Al-Shabab’s apparent preference for a loan deal—something Borussia Mönchengladbach is unwilling to entertain. The club has reiterated its position that it seeks a sale, underlining that Weigl’s departure must contribute financially to their ongoing squad rebuild.
Weigl joined Borussia Mönchengladbach on loan from Benfica in 2022 before making the move permanent in the summer of 2023. Widely regarded for his controlled passing game and tactical awareness, his next steps could represent both a fresh chapter in his career and another example of top European talent moving to the Middle East.
