Qatar 2027 Basketball World Cup Organizers and Olympic Museum Forge Landmark Cultural Partnership
DOHA — In a strategic step blending sports and heritage, the Organising Committee for the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027 has signed a pioneering cultural cooperation agreement with the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, the Qatar Basketball Federation, and the FIBA Foundation — the social and legacy arm of the International Basketball Federation.
The partnership was officially sealed by Mohammed Saad Al Rumaihi, CEO of Qatar Museums, and Mohammed Saad Al Meghaiseeb, Director General of the 2027 Organizing Committee and President of the Qatar Basketball Federation. The collaboration is designed to create a dynamic framework for enriching the cultural, historical, and societal impact of the upcoming tournament.
The agreement focuses on initiating educational, awareness, marketing, and archival projects aimed at showcasing the rich legacy of basketball both within Qatar and across the globe. At its heart is a drive to reinforce Qatar’s position as a global hub for culture and sports innovation.
Key deliverables of the initiative include joint exhibitions and interactive displays focused on basketball heritage, hosted by the 3-2-1 Museum. The public can also expect a roll-out of community events, educational programs, school visits, and workshops spotlighting the sport’s evolution and iconic figures. Additionally, local basketball history will be preserved through artifact collection and digitization, with the FIBA historical archive made available for researchers and historians worldwide.
On the promotional front, the pact outlines plans for digital marketing campaigns, commemorative merchandise, and other retail opportunities connected to the global tournament. To ensure a lasting mark, community courts designed with artistic elements inspired by the Qatar 2027 identity will be developed across the country, along with initiatives in coach development and tournament memorabilia collection.
“Sports and culture are powerful tools for encouraging community engagement and reinforcing national identity. Through them, creativity thrives, social cohesion strengthens, and innovation flourishes — each a fundamental building block of a diverse, knowledge-based society,” said Mohammed Saad Al Rumaihi.
He extended appreciation to all partnering institutions — especially the Qatar Basketball Federation and the Qatar 2027 Basketball World Cup Organizing Committee — for their collaborative spirit.
Mohammed Saad Al Meghaiseeb also shared his sentiments, stating: “This partnership serves as a bridge between Qatar’s rich sporting heritage and the promising future of Qatari basketball.” He thanked Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee and Chair of the 2027 Committee, along with Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Qatar Museums, for their continued commitment to elevating Qatar’s global image in both culture and sport.
Abdullah Yousuf Al Mulla, Director of the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, highlighted during a press conference that the agreement plays a “significant promotional, cultural, and educational role in introducing the world to Qatar’s culture and its capability to host major sporting events”. He emphasized that the museum is a strategic catalyst in achieving the Qatar National Vision 2030, particularly through youth engagement and international sports diplomacy.
As preparations intensify for the Basketball World Cup in 2027, this landmark agreement reflects how Qatar continues to meld culture with global sportsmanship — setting a gold standard for legacy-driven mega events.
