Kuwait Basketball League Set to Launch on October 23
The highly anticipated launch of the Kuwait Basketball League has been confirmed for October 23, with opening games scheduled to take place at the Basketball Federation Hall in the Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Sports Complex. The Basketball Federation’s Competitions Committee has finalized and released the full season schedule, setting the stage for top-tier local basketball action.
In the exciting opening round, key matchups include:
- Kazma vs Al-Arabi
- Al-Qurain vs Al-Sulaibikhat
- Al-Qadsia vs Al-Nasr
- Kuwait Club vs Al-Sahel
This season will feature eight participating clubs, down from nine after Al-Tadamon withdrew. The team cited limited support and failed to register a win last season, having competed without any professional players.
The league will follow a three-division round-robin format, after which the top four teams will advance to the semifinals. These will be played in a best-of-three series — pitting 1st vs 4th and 2nd vs 3rd ranked teams. The finals will adopt a best-of-five format, with the first team to win three games crowned as champions.
Kuwait Club enters the new season as the team to beat, having won the championship for five consecutive years. Their dominance will be tested this year by traditional powerhouses and clubs aiming to break their hold on the title.
Founded in the 1961–1962 season, the Kuwait Basketball League began with six clubs. Over decades of fierce competition, the most successful clubs by title count are:
- Al-Qadsia – 23 titles
- Kuwait Club – 15
- Kazma – 9
- Al-Arabi – 8
- Al-Jahra – 5
- Al-Sahel – 1
Basketball fans across Kuwait are eagerly looking forward to another thrilling season, filled with high-intensity games and exciting matchups, as teams compete for prestige in the country’s premier basketball league.
