Dubai Racing Carnival: A Premier Gateway to the Dubai World Cup
The Dubai Racing Carnival has firmly established itself as a key event on the international equestrian calendar, acting as the main gateway to the globally renowned Dubai World Cup.
The story of horse racing in Dubai traces back to October 1981 at the Camel Track, when the first event was organised by the office of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai. This passion and vision led to the founding of the Dubai Racing Club in 1992 and the subsequent inauguration of the Nad Al Sheba Racecourse.
A defining moment arrived with the inaugural Dubai World Cup in 1996, won by the legendary American thoroughbred, Cigar, marking a historic milestone for UAE sports on the global stage.
In 2010, the event found a permanent home at Meydan Racecourse, now celebrated as the world’s largest integrated racing facility. Meydan covers a staggering 7.5 million square metres and accommodates more than 60,000 spectators. The venue boasts world-class turf and dirt tracks, the luxurious Meydan Hotel, and state-of-the-art stables, elevating Dubai’s status in the racing community.
The Dubai Racing Carnival is spread over 12 to 16 evenings during the winter season, offering tens of millions of dollars in prize money. This substantial reward attracts elite stables from Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Australia, making it a crucial acclimatisation platform for international entrants aiming for the Dubai World Cup.
Trainer Helal Al Alawi observed that the Carnival is a cornerstone of Dubai’s strategy to remain a global racing capital, offering a professional environment that matches the world’s leading tracks.
British trainer Ed Crisford highlighted the season’s prestige, drawing attention to his team’s success with “Meydaan“, owned by Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, after winning the Al Maktoum Classic and earning a coveted spot in the Dubai World Cup.
Similarly, trainer George Scott underlined the competitive edge provided by Meydan’s flat tracks and fast surfaces, citing the record-breaking run of “Westlake” in the Nad Al Sheba Turf as an example of the Carnival’s intense and high-quality competition.
With its world-class facilities, generous prize funds, and the opportunity to compete against the world’s best, the Dubai Racing Carnival continues to shine as a pinnacle of international horse racing and a coveted destination for global equestrian excellence.
