Jude Gazzaz is a 25-year-old Saudi Arabian basketball player from Jeddah, Makkah Region, is a leading voice promoting women’s basketball in Saudi Arabia; she has been a dedicated member of Jeddah United for over 15 years, demonstrating leadership and a commitment to excellence.

Jude actively shares her basketball experiences and team achievements on social media, highlighting her passion for the sport and her team’s successes.

The following interview with Jude Gazzaz delves deeper into her journey as an athlete, her role in shaping the future of women’s basketball in Saudi Arabia, and her aspirations both on and off the court.

Jeddah United has been a pioneer in promoting women’s basketball in Saudi Arabia. What were the biggest challenges you faced in the early days, and how did you overcome them?

Jeddah United has emerged as a groundbreaking force promoting women’s basketball in Saudi Arabia. As a passionate member of the team, I often reflect on the challenges we faced in the early days and how we managed to turn those obstacles into stepping stones on our path to success.

Growing up in Saudi Arabia, my love for basketball was ignited at the age of eight while watching the NBA with my dad. However, I quickly realized that few roads were available for girls like me to pursue this passion. Everything changed the day my mom introduced me to Jeddah United; it felt like a dream come true. Suddenly, I had the opportunity to play basketball with a team that shared my enthusiasm.

In a country where physical education for girls was virtually nonexistent, Jeddah United became a crucial safe haven for us. It was a place where we could engage in sports and lead healthy, active lives. While many of my friends spent their free time practicing unhealthy habits, I found joy on the basketball court, perfecting my skills and immersing myself in the sport I adored.

Initially, we were the only women’s basketball team in the country. Our competition was limited to friendly matches amongst ourselves or traveling abroad to find other teams to face.

However, as more academies emerged across Saudi Arabia, we started competing nationally, sparking interest and curiosity among our communities. At that time, many were skeptical about women’s involvement in sports, and we faced a barrage of negativity.

But we refused to be discouraged. We chose to drown out the criticism and focus on our love for the game. Our hard work and dedication began to shift perceptions, and the movement gained momentum. As the first official women’s basketball team in Saudi Arabia, we garnered significant media attention, with newspapers shining a light on our journey.

While the growth of women’s sports was promising, we still had to navigate the complexities of cultural norms. Whether we played locally or internationally, we adhered to specific guidelines, ensuring we were appropriately covered while playing. We wore hijabs, leggings beneath our shorts, and long-sleeved shirts under our jerseys. These were the rules we had to follow until they evolved a few years ago.

With increased visibility came greater expectations. We understood that we needed to persist and excel. Gradually, the support began to pour in. More academies were established, allowing us to compete on a larger stage. Today, over 20 years later, we proudly boast a professional league, established clubs, a national team, and government backing for our initiatives.

Our journey has been nothing short of remarkable. Despite the obstacles, our consistency and determination have been unwavering. We have proven that with passion and perseverance, nothing can stand in our way. As we continue to rise, we remain committed to inspiring future generations of female athletes in Saudi Arabia.

Over the years, Jeddah United has taken its teams to compete internationally. How have these experiences shaped the growth and confidence of female athletes in Saudi Arabia?

Over the years, Jeddah United has carved out a significant niche in women’s sports, making waves on the international stage. As the first team of its kind in the country, the journey began with uncertainty: Will we ever have the chance to compete overseas? Today, that uncertainty has transformed into thrilling experiences, with Jeddah United teams traveling to eight countries, including the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Malaysia, the Maldives, France, Oman, and Bahrain.

These international trips have played a pivotal role in shaping our skills and understanding of the global sports landscape. Competing internationally allows us to represent Saudi Arabia while immersing ourselves in diverse playing styles, strategies, and cultures. This exposure broadens our understanding of the game and helps us respect and adapt to various competitive environments.

Playing internationally consistently elevates our performance. Each match challenges us to sharpen our skills, leading to significant personal and team growth. The outcomes, whether victory or defeat, serve as invaluable lessons, epitomizing the true spirit of sportsmanship.

Moreover, competing abroad instills a profound sense of camaraderie among teammates. These experiences foster deep bonds as we navigate challenges together, from facing formidable opponents to adapting to new surroundings. This shared journey reinforces our belief in our capabilities, enhances teamwork, and improves communication both on and off the court. Such a supportive environment cultivates individual resilience and growth.

Exposure to different cultures is another vital aspect of our international experiences. As athletes, we learn to appreciate diverse perspectives, contributing to our personal and social development. Navigating unfamiliar situations and engaging with people from various backgrounds enriches our lives and makes us more adaptable athletes.

Of course, international travel comes with challenges; language barriers, cultural adjustments, and travel fatigue can test our resolve. However, overcoming these hurdles fosters resilience and adaptability, traits essential for success not only in sports but also in life.

Competing against female athletes from around the globe can be transformative. It inspires young athletes to envision their potential while motivating them to pursue their dreams with greater fervor. Observing the triumphs of female athletes worldwide instills the belief that they, too, can achieve greatness.

Furthermore, visibility in international competitions amplifies recognition for female athletes, paving the way for more opportunities and dismantling the barriers that have historically limited women’s participation in sports. These experiences shape both athletic and personal development, equipping us with the confidence to overcome obstacles and excel in our careers. By representing female athletes on a global stage, we inspire future generations of young girls to participate in sports, fostering a culture that celebrates talent and dedication regardless of gender.

Ultimately, international exposure benefits athletic performance and transforms athletes into confident, ambitious, and well-rounded individuals ready to tackle challenges both on and off the court. Through these journeys, we are shaping skilled athletes and cultivating leaders prepared to take on the world.

With increasing support for women’s sports in the Kingdom, how do you see the future of female basketball evolving, both at the grassroots level and in professional leagues?

With growing support for women’s sports in the Kingdom, the future of female basketball is poised for remarkable evolution, both at the grassroots level and within professional leagues. This transformative momentum is driven by a convergence of government initiatives, private sector investments, and a cultural shift that increasingly embraces women’s participation in sports.

At the grassroots level, we are witnessing an exciting surge of interest among young girls inspired to take up basketball. Enhanced funding for youth programs, school leagues, and local basketball academies ensures aspiring players access to proper training, skilled coaches, and competitive environments. Additionally, initiatives that promote sports education in schools play a crucial role in normalizing basketball as an option for girls from a young age.

The impact of social media and improved sports media coverage cannot be overstated. These platforms have helped shift societal perceptions, offering visibility to female athletes and showcasing them as role models. This increased representation is crucial in motivating more girls to pursue the sport seriously, as they see that a successful basketball career is now within reach.

On the professional level, establishing structured leagues and expanding competitive opportunities create an environment where female athletes can thrive. Developing domestic leagues, club teams, and regional tournaments elevates the level of play, providing players with regular chances to compete at high standards.

Sponsorship and investment from both the public and private sectors are crucial in financially supporting female athletes. As brands and organizations recognize the growing value of women’s sports, we expect to see a rise in endorsements, scholarships, and professional contracts, enabling female basketball players to focus on their development.

Moreover, partnerships with international basketball federations and collaborations with professional leagues abroad will offer Saudi female athletes invaluable experience and exposure at the top levels of the sport. These opportunities enhance skill development and position Saudi Arabia as an emerging powerhouse in women’s basketball on the global stage.

Beyond the technical aspects of the sport, the rapid growth in support for women’s basketball signifies a profound cultural shift. Female athletes are pushing boundaries and challenging stereotypes, paving the way for future generations to pursue sports without hesitation. Normalizing women in professional sports fosters an inclusive environment where talent, dedication, and passion precede gender.

The increasing number of Saudi women stepping into leadership roles within the basketball community as coaches, referees, and administrators will further shape the sport’s development. Their involvement in decision-making processes is essential for creating policies that support gender equality in sports and ensure better resources for female athletes.

With continued investment, visibility, and relentless commitment from various stakeholders, the future of female basketball in the Kingdom shines exceptionally bright. We stand on the verge of a transformative era in which young girls can dream of playing professionally, competing internationally, and representing their country on the world stage.

This is just the beginning. With increasing societal support, female athletes’ passion, resilience, and talent will push women’s basketball in Saudi Arabia to new heights and inspire generations to come.

Social media plays a key role in shaping perceptions and inspiring young athletes. How has Jeddah United leveraged platforms like Instagram to promote female participation in sports?

Social media has emerged as a pivotal force in shaping perceptions and inspiring the next generation of athletes. Jeddah United has effectively leveraged social media platforms like Instagram to promote female participation in sports. Using digital outreach to inspire, educate, and engage a growing community of female athletes, the club has helped reshape perceptions and encourage more women to take up basketball and other sports through strategic content, storytelling, and interactive engagement.

At the heart of Jeddah United’s strategy is powerful storytelling that highlights the achievements of female athletes. By sharing vibrant photos, engaging videos, and inspiring success stories from players competing in both local and international arenas, the club provides relatable role models for young girls. Witnessing Saudi women excel in basketball at various levels fosters the belief that sports are for everyone, and it reinforces the notion that female athletes deserve significant recognition for their accomplishments.

The club’s Instagram presence is a powerful tool for promoting inclusive participation. Jeddah United regularly shares information about basketball camps, training sessions, and competitive events tailored specifically for women. These posts inform followers about upcoming opportunities and create an inviting atmosphere by showcasing the club’s supportive community. Engaging content, like behind-the-scenes training clips and heartfelt testimonials from players, allows aspiring athletes to envision themselves as part of this empowering team.

Social media is a powerful tool for breaking stereotypes, and Jeddah United has used Instagram to shift narratives around women’s sports. By sharing content highlighting female athletes’ dedication, discipline, and teamwork, the club helps normalize women’s participation in basketball. Inspirational messages, motivational quotes, and athlete interviews all play a role in changing mindsets and promoting a culture that values women’s contributions to sports.

The club actively collaborates with other sports organizations, influencers, and female athletes to extend its reach. By engaging with prominent figures in women’s sports, Jeddah United strengthens its digital presence and connects with a larger audience. They create a ripple effect through hashtags, partnerships, and community-driven campaigns, encouraging more girls to join the growing movement.

Instagram is not just a platform for engagement but a window into the club’s international journey. Jeddah United documents the experiences of its teams as they compete against top-tier opponents, representing Saudi Arabia on global platforms.

By providing real-time updates, match highlights, and player reflections, the club showcases its successes and inspires female athletes to dream bigger and pursue international recognition.

Through its innovative approach to social media, Jeddah United plays a crucial role in increasing female participation in basketball and fostering a more inclusive sports culture in Saudi Arabia. Their ongoing efforts continue to inspire the next generation of athletes, proving that digital visibility can transform women’s sports. With a growing support base and engagement, Jeddah United is well-equipped to expand its influence, encouraging even more young women to step onto the court and paving the way for a thriving future in women’s basketball.

What advice would you give to young Saudi girls who aspire to become professional basketball players, and how can initiatives like Jeddah United help them achieve their dreams?

The dream of becoming a professional basketball player in Saudi Arabia is alive and thriving, especially among young girls. This journey demands dedication, hard work, and resilience, but success is well within reach with the right mindset and support.

Success in basketball, as in any sport, hinges on consistent effort. Regular training is vital; focus on honing your skills and embrace the discipline that leads to progress. Daily practice, physical fitness, and mental conditioning create a solid foundation for long-term growth. The commitment to continuously improve will set you apart from the competition.

As the saying goes, “The more you play, the better you become.” Engaging in local leagues, school tournaments, and friendly matches is crucial for gaining real-game experience. Competing sharpens your skills and fosters essential traits such as quick decision-making, teamwork, and resilience, qualities that are indispensable for any professional athlete.

Obstacles are inevitable on the path to success, but perseverance is key. Believe in your abilities, stay focused on your goals, and treat setbacks as learning opportunities. Confidence is just as vital as skill; be prepared for criticism, but use it as motivation to push yourself further. Fight for your dreams, as many have paved the way for the future of women’s basketball in our country. We want younger athletes to look up to us, just as we admire international players.

Jeddah United plays an essential role in nurturing and developing young female basketball talent in Saudi Arabia. This initiative brings opportunities to aspiring athletes who might otherwise have limited access to professional training and competition.

The academy features structured programs led by experienced coaches who impart crucial technical and tactical knowledge of the game. These training sessions are designed to elevate skills and prepare players for high-stakes competition.

Moreover, the club organizes local and international tournaments, allowing players to test their skills against formidable opponents. Exposure to diverse playing styles and environments is invaluable for growth and confidence. Competing in international tournaments allows athletes to learn new techniques and gain experiences that ready them for potential professional careers.

Jeddah United creates a network of female athletes who support each other and push one another to excel.

Beyond skill development, Jeddah United fosters a supportive network of female athletes who encourage and inspire one another to reach new heights. The club actively breaks barriers and champions the growth of women’s basketball in the Kingdom, advocating for increased opportunities and awareness.

If you dream of becoming a professional basketball player, now is the time to take the first step. Work hard, seek opportunities, and surround yourself with mentors and teammates who believe in your potential. Organizations like Jeddah United are here to provide the training, resources, and competitive experiences necessary for success.

Basketball transcends mere sport; it is a journey filled with growth, discipline, and perseverance. Believe in yourself, remain committed, and never shy away from pushing your boundaries. Your aspiration of becoming a professional athlete is within reach, and with dedication and support, you can turn that dream into reality.

How has Jeddah United impacted your life and future in sports, and what lessons have you learned through your experiences with the team?

Jeddah United has profoundly impacted my life and future in ways I could never have anticipated. My journey with the team ignited my passion for basketball and set me on the path toward becoming a professional player. The support I found within the team environment not only strengthened my skills on the court but also deepened my commitment to pursuing a career in sports.

As I navigated the challenges and triumphs of being part of this team, I experienced significant personal growth. The collaborative nature of basketball taught me the importance of teamwork, communication, and resilience. I learned to value each member’s contribution, understanding that our collective efforts often led to greater success than individual achievements. This realization fostered a strong sense of community and belonging, helping me develop interpersonal skills that extend beyond the court.

Moreover, the traveling we’ve done as a team has been transformative. Competing in various locations exposed me to different cultures, traditions, and lifestyles. Each journey offered a unique opportunity to learn and appreciate the diversity of our world. I became increasingly curious about the customs and values of the places we visited, igniting a love for learning and exploration that I hadn’t fully embraced.

These experiences gave me a greater perspective on life, fostering adaptability and open-mindedness. I realized that each game was not just about winning but also about understanding and respecting the varied backgrounds of our opponents and colleagues. This cultural exposure enriched my life, shaped my worldview, and instilled a desire to continue exploring new horizons in both my athletic career and personal endeavors. Ultimately, my time with Jeddah United has not only propelled my ambitions in basketball but has also nurtured my growth as a global citizen, eager to learn from the diverse tapestry of experiences that life has to offer.

In addition to playing, I took on a part-time coaching role with Jeddah United, which allowed me to give back to the community meaningfully. I went on to get coaching certifications to ensure I could effectively guide young female athletes, helping them become the best versions of themselves both on and off the court. My mission extended beyond just sports; I aimed to instill values that would enable these young women to be contributing members of society.

As a team, we also engage in a lot of community service, working with the Help Center, a private non-profit center that aims to serve, care for, and elevate people with intellectual disabilities, as well as the Institute for the Deaf and Mute in Jeddah. Participating in community service inspires the youth to appreciate and respect everyone around them. I believe in the philosophy of “lead by example,” as younger athletes who feel connected to their coaches are more likely to aspire to follow in their footsteps. This principle is how I continue to lead my coaching career, fostering a supportive and motivated environment for everyone involved. These experiences highlighted the importance of teamwork, resilience, and social responsibility, further shaping my character and perspective on life.

Together, we celebrated numerous achievements, including winning the first two Saudi Games and securing a podium finish in the third year. These victories are a testament to our hard work, dedication, and passion for the sport. With the government’s unwavering support, we have gained more opportunities that significantly raise the level of play.

Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 emphasizes the importance of sports in fostering a healthier and more active society. Initiatives under this vision provide essential infrastructure, funding, and programs that enhance athlete development and community engagement. For Jeddah United, this support not only boosts our competitive edge but also inspires us to aim higher, foster local talent, and contribute to the country’s broader goals in sports and recreation. The momentum we gain from these initiatives solidifies our commitment to excellence and paves the way for future success.

How did your involvement with basketball influence your decision to pursue a master’s degree, and what have you gained from your studies?

One of the most pivotal moments in my journey was when I made the bold decision to travel to Spain to pursue a master’s degree in communications and sports journalism at the Real Madrid Graduate School, recognized as the best club in the world. This choice was not merely an academic pursuit; it was an opportunity to immerse myself in a vibrant sports culture that has long been a source of inspiration for athletes and journalists alike.

Madrid, often celebrated as the sports capital of the world, offered me an unparalleled environment to deepen my understanding of the sports industry. Walking the historic streets of this city, I could feel the passion for sports pulsating through the culture. From the energy of the crowds at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium and the Movistar Arena to the camaraderie among fans in local cafés, every experience reinforced my desire to work within this dynamic field.

Through my studies, I have been exposed to some of the most innovative practices in sports journalism and communications. Collaborating with industry professionals, engaging in hands-on projects, and learning from leading experts have equipped me with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel. The blend of theory and practical applications has been invaluable as I have learned to navigate the complexities of sports media in a rapidly evolving landscape.

I am now committed to leveraging everything I have learned in Spain to make a meaningful contribution to the evolution of sports in Saudi Arabia. As the country invests significantly in sports development and aims to expand its influence on the global stage, I envision playing a role in shaping narratives that resonate both locally and internationally. Whether through promoting local talents, reporting on major events, or fostering a deeper appreciation for sports culture among the Saudi youth, I am eager to be part of this exciting journey.

My time in Madrid has not only enhanced my professional capabilities but has also ignited a passion within me to bridge cultures through sports journalism. I look forward to bringing back innovative ideas and perspectives to help elevate the sports industry in Saudi Arabia and connect it with the broader global community.

How do you envision contributing to the growth of sports in Saudi Arabia and inspiring future generations of young female athletes, and what are your next steps?

Overall, Jeddah United has had an unforgettable influence not only on my athletic career but also on my personal development. My journey with this team has been a transformative experience that has shaped both my passion for basketball and my vision for the future. The experiences, friendships, and lessons learned have shaped who I am today and continue to inspire me as I navigate my professional journey in sports and strive to make a positive impact in the community. The invaluable lessons learned on the court, coupled with my dedication to community service and coaching, have equipped me with the skills necessary to excel in the sports industry.

The support I’ve received through initiatives like Saud Arabia’s Vision 2030 has further solidified my resolve to contribute to the growth of sports in my country. My decision to pursue a master’s degree in communications and sports journalism in Spain marks a significant step in my journey, allowing me to immerse myself in a rich sporting culture and expand my knowledge.

As I look ahead, I remain committed to not only achieving my personal ambitions but also uplifting those around me, fostering a spirit of teamwork and inclusivity. I hope to pass on all my valuable experiences and advice to generations of aspiring Saudi female athletes, empowering them to pursue their dreams and break barriers in the world of sports. My experiences have planted a deep appreciation for the sport and a profound understanding of its power to unite and inspire wherever the journey may take me next.
