The FIVB Beach Volleyball Empowerment Programme is making waves at the Baden Futures Challenge this week, as four determined duos sponsored by the initiative have surged into the semifinals—positioning themselves just one medal away from the top of the podium.
On the women’s side, Farida El Askalany and Doaa Elghobashy from Egypt delivered a sensational run, topping their pool and navigating through intense knockout rounds. Their chemistry and persistent defense have stamped them as a major threat, beating more experienced pairs along the way. On the men’s side, the Latvian duo of Kristaps Smits and Matiss Gabdullins demonstrated remarkable resolve and precision under pressure, upsetting higher-seeded teams to reach the penultimate round.
Supporting these standout teams are the Kenyan women’s pair, Gaudencia Makokha and Brackcides Agala, and the Chilean men’s combination, Noe Aravena and Vicente Droguett. Both partnerships, mentored through the Empowerment Programme, have credited access to high-level coaching and international training camps as pivotal to their recent results.
The Empowerment Programme is a new project by the FIVB, aimed at developing volleyball talent in emerging markets by providing resources, coaching support, and critical international competition experience.
