The Beginning
Editor: Brian Smith
Jak, can you take us back to the moment you first stepped into a boxing gym? What inspired you to pursue this sport?
Jak Corrie:
I first entered the boxing gym when I was about 14 or 15 years old. At the time, I was a bit overweight, and I joined mainly to lose weight. That’s when I met my coach, Mick Burke, and we got cracking straight away. I still remember my very first sparring session—it wasn’t the greatest display, but I actually enjoyed taking a punch, which may sound odd, but it ignited something in me. Coach Mick saw potential in me and encouraged me to compete in my very first skills bout. From that day on, I fell in love with the game.
Training Regimen
Editor:
Your recent performances have been impressive. Could you share a glimpse into your daily training routine and how you prepare for a big fight?
Jak Corrie:
As everyone knows, the start of a professional boxing career is incredibly tough—it takes a lifetime of sacrifice for that one moment when you turn pro and win titles. I’m still a newcomer to the pro game, so along with training, I work a regular job to cover my expenses during this grind. Most days, I wake up at around 5 or 6 AM and head out to conduct 121 client sessions where I teach boxing and fitness. I help people reach their health and fitness goals while introducing them to the fundamentals of boxing. Typically, I work with two to three clients in the morning before heading to my own training session with Liam around 10 AM. Once my training is done, I head home, cook meals prescribed by my nutritionist while in camp, and then often return for more sessions in the afternoon or evening.
In addition, my business partner and I are working on a passion project to elevate and clean up amateur boxing here in the UAE—a project that’s been in the works for several months. I fit meetings in between client sessions and training. Ultimately, my long-term goal is to grow the amateur sport, give the next generation a head start in their careers, and eventually have the freedom to pursue boxing full time.
I’d love to box full time, and I know that with the backing of some additional sponsors, I can devote 100% of my time to boxing
Memorable Fight
Editor:
Out of all your bouts so far, which one stands out as the most memorable, and why?
Jak Corrie:
My most memorable fight has to be my debut, where I scored a second-round knockout. Every boxer dreams of entering the pro game, and having doctors in the UK once told me I’d never box again because of a severe injury made that victory even sweeter. It was my first fight after becoming a father, so showing my daughter that with dedication and hard work anything is possible is something I will cherish forever.
Challenges in Boxing
Editor:
Boxing is as much mental as it is physical. What has been the biggest challenge in your career, and how did you overcome it?
Jak Corrie:
The biggest challenge I’ve faced was suffering a severe shoulder injury when I was just starting to peak in my career. I was set to compete in the ABAs for the second time in the UK, and I had high hopes. The injury occurred just before my daughter was born—after she arrived, things took a turn. Following multiple hospital visits, my doctor advised me to retire, saying that continuing could cause lasting damage. That setback hit me hard; I felt like I’d lost the passion of my life. Ultimately, it led me to move to Dubai a year later, as I needed a fresh start and a way to escape the emotional turmoil.
Life Outside the Ring
Editor:
When you’re not training or fighting, how do you unwind and spend your time?
Jak Corrie:
When I’m not in the gym or stepping into the ring, I make it a priority to visit the UK as often as I can to see my daughter. After my last fight, I celebrated by visiting home for my birthday, and after my upcoming fight, I’ll return to camp immediately due to the quick turnaround—but after my June fight, I plan to go home again and spend a few weeks with my little champion. I also enjoy spending time on the golf course, working on developing amateur boxing here, and simply relaxing and unwinding.
I love my Daughter, she really is my motivation
Future Goals
Editor:
What are your aspirations in boxing? Are there any specific titles or opponents you’re aiming for?
Jak Corrie:
Right now, I’m 4-0, and like every boxer, I dream of holding a world title—that’s exactly where I’m headed. I have a lot of time to make up for due to my previous injury, but I’m coming for it all. One quality I’m most proud of is my willingness to step into the ring with anyone. I dedicate everything to this game; my goal is to achieve multiple titles and create a legacy for my daughter and my team. More than that, I want to prove to my daughter that with the right attitude, anything is possible.
I’d love to box full time, and I know that with the backing of some additional sponsors, I can devote 100% of my time to boxing. I want to thank my current sponsors for their support:
• Equity Real Estate
• WOWHYDRATE Arabia
• Agaru Sport
• Ortho Pro Clinic
• TreatmentRoom
• GBO
• Alax
My manager, Aaron Bickerstaff, and my coach, Liam Walsh, have a well-planned roadmap for me. They know when I’m ready for certain titles and will secure the right fights. For now, I show up, train with sheer dedication, and enter each fight determined to get the job done.
Advice for Aspiring Boxers
Editor:
What advice would you give to young athletes who dream of making it big in the boxing world?
Jak Corrie:
My advice to the younger generation is simple: lock in, train hard, surround yourself with positive people who push you, and never give up.
