Qatar Considers Bid to Host 2029 FIFA Club World Cup: Winter Tournament a Possibility
Qatar is reportedly weighing up a bid to host the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup, with the option to stage the tournament in the winter months. This move would position Qatar once again at the centre of global football, less than a decade after the nation hosted the 2022 World Cup.
According to sources with knowledge of the negotiations, Qatar has held preliminary discussions with FIFA about the possibility of both hosting the event and moving it from its traditional June-July slot into the winter. This follows the successful delivery and international acclaim of the 2022 men’s World Cup, which was also held in the cooler months to avoid the region’s extreme summer temperatures.
The 2029 Club World Cup is set to be an expanded edition, involving 32 of the world’s leading club teams. Such an event would further elevate the country’s status as a hub for high-profile sporting events. FIFA’s president Gianni Infantino has previously been vocal about the importance of bringing its biggest tournaments to new regions, stating: “We want to make football truly global.”
While host selection for the 2029 tournament has not been finalized, Qatar is understood to be positioning itself as a front-runner. The Gulf state’s infrastructure, experienced logistics teams, and stadiums built for the 2022 World Cup are seen as major advantages. Hosting in the winter is under particular consideration to ensure the “best environment for players and fans”.
However, such a move could again create challenges for domestic football leagues, as it would disrupt the regular season schedules of the world’s top clubs, just as the 2022 World Cup did.
Should the bid be successful, it would reinforce Qatar’s burgeoning reputation for delivering global sports events, and further integrate the Middle East into the mainstream of international football.
