Doha Falcons Take GCL Podium in Rome as Title Race Heats Up
The dramatic showdown at the Global Champions League (GCL) in Rome tightened an already thrilling championship race, as the Doha Falcons soared to a runner-up finish behind the victorious Cannes Stars powered by Iron Dames, who delivered the competition’s only four flawless rounds.
With just two events remaining in the 2025 season, a razor-thin margin separates the top contenders. Both Cannes Stars and Valkenswaard United now sit at 277 points apiece, though Valkenswaard retain the top position courtesy of more wins over the season.
The iconic Circus Maximus arena witnessed a dominant display of show jumping mastery by the Cannes Stars. The formidable pairing of Sophie Hinners with Iron Dames Combella and Katrin Eckermann aboard Chao Lee and Iron Dames Dialou Blue PS were in unbeatable form. With perfect clear rounds and a leading overall time of 151.17 seconds, they powered their team to a commanding victory.
Katrin Eckermann reflected on the moment:
“It’s always special to win with this team – we trust each other completely, and the horses were in fantastic form today. Rome is one of the most beautiful shows on the circuit, and this win means everything for our championship fight.”
The Doha Falcons kept fans on edge with their tight and tactical execution. Opting to maintain the same rider-horse pairs for both rounds, the Falcons earned second place with a total of 4 faults. Sheikh Ali Al Khalid Al Thani impressed with Com’on Stanley, supported by Bassem Mohammed with Rocket Man, in a high-stakes performance that paid off.
Sheikh Ali shared his pride after the event:
“I am really happy with my team and my horse who jumped amazing today. This result is really amazing and to help the team rise a bit in the rankings so we are so happy.”
Bassem Mohammed added:
“We always try to stick to our plan and jump clear rounds in these team competitions. I am really happy to have my old team member back in the game and I couldn’t be more happy to have this result today standing beside him.”
Joining the podium for the first time this season, the Paris Panthers clinched third place with a total of 6 faults. Standout performances came from Guido Grimaldi on Gentleman, and Clara Pezzoli aboard Fantasia de Beaufour and Hadewyn van’t Ravennest, showcasing their potential at a crucial moment in the season.
As the GCL championship nears its final stages, the intensity is only set to rise. With Doha Falcons finding form, and Cannes Stars throwing down the gauntlet to Valkenswaard United, the race to the top is wide open.
