Mohamed Arshad Jamaldeen, known for his versatility as a fly-half, calm leadership, and tactical game management, has been a recognizable name on the rugby field in Sri Lanka and now in the United Arab Emirates. Having captained the prestigious Royal College team in 2012 and contributed to championship-winning squads at top Sri Lankan clubs like Kandy Sports Club and Police Sports Club, Arshad brought his passion and expertise to the UAE, becoming an instrumental figure for the Royal Tuskers—now Dubai Tuskers— as both vice-captain and captain. As a driving force in team cohesion and culture, he’s shaped the Tuskers into a formidable presence at the Emirates Dubai Rugby Sevens and other regional tournaments. Off the rugby field, Arshad leads as the Managing Director of Al Haqba Cleaning Services, drawing from the discipline and teamwork learned through sport to lead in business. With a dedication to inspiring the next generation, Arshad continues to combine his roles as a player, leader, and mentor. Below, SPORTS&GULF MAGAZINE brings you an exclusive interview with Mohamed Arshad Jamaldeen, the Captain of Dubai Tuskers Rugby Club.
As captain of the Dubai Tuskers, how have you prepared your teammates, both physically and mentally, for the competitive environment of the Rugby 7s in Dubai?
This year we placed a strong focus on conditioning, speed, and recovery because Rugby Sevens demands a very high work rate. Our training sessions were designed to mirror the tempo of the tournament so the players can adapt quickly under pressure. Mentally, I encouraged the team to stay present, trust our systems, and support each other in every moment. We are playing with confidence and clarity, and that has helped us bring a very positive mindset into the competition.

What do you see as the biggest strengths of your team, and how do you plan to leverage them during this year’s tournament?
Our biggest strengths are unity, discipline, and smart decision making. Many of us have played together for years, so our understanding on the field is natural and instinctive. We also have an excellent balance of experience and young talent. This allows us to stay calm under pressure and accelerate the game when the opportunity opens. We plan to use our structure and our communication to control the tempo, maintain possession, and finish strongly.

Can you share a memorable moment or challenge the Tuskers have faced together on your journey to the Rugby 7s, and how did you overcome it?
One of our most memorable challenges came during a season where injuries had reduced our squad and we had to rely on players taking on new roles. Instead of seeing it as a setback, the team came together and pushed even harder. We focused on trust and accountability, and the response from every player was inspiring. That period reminded us that resilience is one of our greatest qualities, and it strengthened our belief in each other.

The Rugby 7s attracts teams from around the world—who do you see as your toughest competition this year, and how are you strategizing for those matches?
Every team at the Rugby Sevens brings a unique style, so the competition is always intense. The toughest sides are usually the ones who combine pace, skill, and strong defensive structures. Our strategy is to play to our strengths, stay disciplined, and adjust quickly during the match. If we execute our game plan with precision and keep our composure, we can match any team in the tournament.

What message would you like to share with your fans and aspiring rugby players in Dubai who look up to you and the Tuskers?
I want to thank all our supporters for their energy and belief. Your support truly lifts us. To the young players, I want to say that rugby is a sport built on respect, effort, and commitment. Stay dedicated, learn from every experience, and trust the process. With hard work and passion, you can go far. We play not only for ourselves but for everyone who believes in us.
Arshad Jamaldeen’s journey is a testament to dedication, unity, and the power of resilient leadership. His words and actions both on and off the field continue to motivate teammates and young players alike. We wish the Dubai Tuskers success in their Rugby 7s campaign and look forward to watching their infectious spirit make a mark on the tournament for years to come.
