Omani Runners Spotlight Nation on Global Athletic Stage Omani runners are increasingly making a global impact, proving that the Sultanate’s presence in international sports is steadily on the rise. With appearances in high-profile marathons and running events across different continents, these athletes are not just competing — they are promoting Oman’s rich culture, natural beauty, and rising sports scene to the world. This wave of athletic achievement has placed a spotlight on Oman’s vibrant and growing running community, with individual stories of perseverance and purpose inspiring both local and global audiences. At the recent Bosnia Marathon 2025, Omani athletes Hamed al Mahrouqi and Abdullah al Numani successfully completed the 21-km half marathon, representing Muscat Road Runners in their quest to elevate their homeland on the world stage. Hamed and Al Numani, who began their running careers in 2010, have each participated in numerous international events with a shared purpose — to represent and promote Oman beyond its borders. Hamed, whose track record includes 80 half marathons, nine full marathons, and four ultra-marathons worldwide, said:”I feel proud when I see myself at such events. It makes me feel fit while doing my small bit to tell the world about Oman.” Meanwhile, 50-year-old Al Numani, another seasoned athlete, echoed similar sentiments about his mission.”I always participate in international events whenever I can. I am doing my part to promote my country Oman.”He added,”Also, the marathon is not really about winning, it’s about fitness. Toeing the starting line of a marathon, regardless of the language we speak, or the colour of your skin, we all stand as equal. Perhaps the world would be a better place if more people run.” Beyond individual success stories, Oman is also emerging as a hub for competitive running events, welcoming international participation and showcasing its breathtaking landscapes and hospitality. The Himam Trail Run Race is a major event in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), drawing over 4,000 runners from 65 countries, and highlighting Oman’s reputation as a regional leader in long-distance trail events. Likewise, the International Mountain Running Challenge, organised by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MoHT), celebrates Oman’s rugged mountainous terrain while also serving the dual purpose of rejuvenating tourism. These events cater to varying age groups and race formats, aligning with national strategies to cultivate a new generation of athletes capable of representing Oman internationally. As local runners set new benchmarks abroad, and Oman cultivates world-class events at home, the country’s footprint in the global running community continues to expand — driven by passion, pride, and a commitment to national visibility. — Team V.DIR-EM-UAE
